Discovering Botswana Cuisine
Eating in Botswana can be adventurous. Botswana’s cuisine reflects its cultural diversity and rich natural resources, offering a variety of flavors. Here are some highlights of traditional Botswanan food:
Biltong: Similar to Namibia, biltong is a popular snack in Botswana. This cured and air-dried meat, often made from beef or game, is seasoned with spices and enjoyed for its rich flavor.
Morogo: This is a type of wild spinach that is often cooked with onions and tomatoes. It’s a nutritious side dish and a common feature in many traditional meals.
Game Meat: Botswana is known for its game meat, including kudu, oryx, and impala. These meats are often grilled or prepared in stews, offering a taste of the country’s rich wildlife.
Botswana Fish: Fresh fish from the Okavango Delta and Chobe River is also popular. Fish such as tilapia is often grilled or fried and served with local sides.
Traditional Beverages: You might enjoy local drinks like ginger beer or traditional sorghum beer, known as "chibuku," which is popular in many communities.
Meal Inclusions on Tours
The cost of most meals is included in our Go Beyond Tours, Private Tours, and Short Stay Extensions. For specific meal inclusions, please refer to your itinerary. Water is included with meals but all other drinks are at personal expense. Always drink boiled or bottled water.
Water
We always recommend bottled water as a first option when in a foreign country, especially if you have a sensitive stomach or are traveling to rural areas where water quality may be less reliable. Some hotels provide free bottled water in your room. Bottled drinking water, soft drinks and beer are widely available and affordable.
Dietary Requirements
Those with dietary requirements will be catered for - just make sure to inform your booking agent of any specific requirements well in advance of your trip. Please be aware however that restaurants may not always be able to accommodate these. Wendy Wu Tours cannot guarantee that there will be no cross-contamination for travellers with severe allergies, and suggest you remind each restaurant of your requirements. Gluten-free food may not be as readily available as in Australia.
Whilst travelling away from major cities, it is highly recommended that passengers with food intolerances take additional food items, as not all dietary requests will be met due to the limited foods available.
