Dress Appropriately
When visiting Africa, we recommend dressing appropriately for comfort and cultural respect. In the warmer climate, wearing lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen, with casual attire such as shorts and t-shirts are suitable for everyday wear. For outdoor activities and safaris, neutral colours like khaki and beige blend well with the environment, while sun protection items such as wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and long sleeves are essential.
It's important to dress modestly in traditional or rural areas, opting for conservative clothing to respect local customs.
Cooler months (April to September)
In Africa, winter temperatures can drop to freezing, especially at higher altitudes, with average monthly temperatures between 11°C in June and July. Some areas, like the Drakensberg mountains and Lesotho, can experience snowfall. In contrast, Northern Africa's winters are milder, with temperatures often in the low 20°C.
A light jacket or jumper is advisable, while a rain jacket may be needed during the rainy season. Layered clothing is ideal, as mornings can be cool & Be prepared for possible winds in certain areas.
Warmer Months (September to March):
African summers are hot and wet, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Temperatures often average 32°C (90°F) but can exceed 40°C (104°F) in some areas, particularly in the Sahara Desert. Humidity is also high, making it feel even hotter.
Light, breathable clothing is recommended, along with sun protection like hats and sunscreen. If you're visiting the coast, like Swakopmund, you may experience cooler temperatures and fog.
