Eating & Drinking (Namibia)

All meals are included on our Group tours, unless stated otherwise in your itinerary. For specific meal inclusions on private arrangements or extensions, please refer to your day-to-day itinerary.

The meals in Namibia will introduce the local cuisine, highlighting the country's culinary diversity, indigenous traditions, and European influences. Breakfast is usually served at your hotel and includes a mix of continental and cooked options.

Some main traditional dishes you may come across in Namibia are:

  • Biltong – a dried, cured meat snack, similar to beef jerky but with a distinct spice blend and often made from game meat.

  • Kapana – grilled beef, usually served with chili and pap (a maize porridge) at local street markets.

  • Pap – a staple maize meal similar to polenta, typically served with meat or vegetable stews.

  • Potjiekos – a slow-cooked meat and vegetable stew prepared in a cast iron pot over an open flame.

  • Game meats – including oryx and springbok, commonly grilled or stewed.

  • Namibian seafood – especially kingklip, a white fish often grilled or fried in coastal regions.

  • Regional specialties – from meat-filled pies in German-influenced towns to traditional indigenous meals depending on your region of travel.

While desserts are not a major feature of the local cuisine, meals may conclude with seasonal fruit or local sweet treats.

Drinking & Water

You may wish to enjoy beer, wine, soft drinks, or bottled water with your meals. Please note that drinks are not included in your tour price and must be paid for directly to the restaurant staff. Traditional beverages like omagongo (a fermented marula or mango drink) may also be available. Tea and coffee are usually available at breakfast.

We strongly recommend drinking only bottled or boiled water in Namibia and avoiding ice in drinks. Bottled water is widely available, and many hotels provide complimentary bottles and/or kettles for boiling water.

Dietary Requirements

Those with dietary requirements will be catered for - just make sure to inform your booking agent of any specific requirements well in advance of your trip. Please be aware however that restaurants may not always be able to accommodate these. Wendy Wu Tours cannot guarantee that there will be no cross-contamination for travellers with severe allergies, and suggest you remind each restaurant of your requirements. Gluten-free food may not be as readily available as in Australia.

Whilst travelling away from major cities, it is highly recommended that passengers with food intolerances take additional food items, as not all dietary requests will be met due to the limited foods available.
