We recommend that you take a combination of cash and card with you.
Cash can be exchanged at hotels and banks, but you will need to check with your Local Guide before travelling to smaller towns. USD is highly exchangeable so if you have any left over from another trip, you can bring this also. We suggest for your convenience that you ensure your US Dollars are from the new series to avoid any difficulties exchanging money during your trip. Please only carry what you will need each day to avoid unwanted attention.
ATMs can be found in most major cities and towns but the most reliable are those next to bank branches. Turkish ATMs don't often charge withdrawal fees but it is best to check with your bank as they may charge a withdrawal and foreign exchange fee. Therefore it is best to try withdraw as few times as possible.
It is recommended to always withdraw Turkish Lira when using ATMs in Turkey. By doing so, you will receive the mid-market rate for currency exchange. If you attempt to withdraw in a different currency, the ATM may apply an inflated exchange rate through Dynamic Currency Conversion, resulting in unnecessary extra fees.
We recommend you alert your bank of your travel plans prior to departure to avoid your card being blocked or in case of any fraudulent activity.
