Currency (Colombia)

The local currency is the Colombian Peso (COP).

You can enter or exit Colombia with up to US$10,000 in cash, or its equivalent in any currency. Anything in excess of this amount must be declared on arrival and may be confiscated.

You can change US dollars and euros in exchange bureaus and commercial banks. Major hotels and tourist places accept international credit cards. ATM and credit card facilities are more limited in rural areas. Contact your bank to make sure your cards will work in Colombia.

We recommend that you have access to more than one source of money – bringing a combination of cash and a credit/debit card will give the most security and flexibility while travelling.

Exchanging Money

Money can be exchanged at international airports, banks and post offices that display the “Authorized Foreign Exchange” sign (although exchanging foreign currency at banks and post offices can be a complicated and lengthy procedure), some hotels in large cities, major department stores and major train stations. Remember to watch out for hidden fees if exchanging money. In rural areas it will be difficult to find anywhere to exchange money.

ATMs:

• We recommend using ATMs located inside enclosed, secure bank branches or shopping malls (centros comerciales). Avoid standalone street ATMs, especially at night.
• Notify your bank: Always inform your bank or card issuer of your travel dates to avoid having your card locked for suspected fraud.

• Card and withdrawal limits: It’s a good idea to bring both a Visa and a Mastercard, as some Colombian machines can be finicky with specific foreign cards.
